Ukraine War’s Unseen Heroes: Rescuing Animals Amidst Conflict

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now over two years in duration, has seen more than 15,000 animals rescued from the ravages of war. This monumental effort has been spearheaded by PETA Germany and Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), a Ukraine-based organization.

While stories of zoo animals like lions and Asiatic black bears being saved have made headlines, thousands of domesticated animals have also been rescued, often from areas under active shelling.

ARK’s dedicated teams are working tirelessly, providing more than 40 tons of food per month to a variety of animals including cats, dogs, horses, and donkeys. They also offer free spay/neuter surgeries to 150 animals every month and help maintain animal refuges in Kharkiv.

In collaboration with their German partners, many of these animals are given a second or even third chance at life through international rescue programs. PETA, a proud supporter of ARK’s work, regularly updates on the animals saved. Their stories often involve soldiers and civilians braving desperate conditions to care for and shelter animals abandoned during violent conflict.

“Animals don’t wage wars, but they’re victims of them, left to suffer without food, water, or veterinary attention for grievous injuries unless someone who cares comes to their aid,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk.

Not all rescue operations involve dodging bullets. Some, like the rescue of a swan stranded on thin ice with a blood-stained wing, require innovative solutions. In this case, ARK members used an inflatable boat as a sled and a lifeboat, ready to act if the ice gave way.

Nearly all the animals rescued require immediate medical attention for injuries such as shrapnel wounds, broken bones, or infections. ARK’s hospital is equipped to treat an astounding 100 to 130 animals per day for war-related injuries or deprivation, like Alaska the goat who suffered a broken leg.
